When buying new tyres in the UK, understanding tyre labels is essential for safety, performance, and legal compliance. Since November 2012, all tyres sold in the EU (and still applicable post-Brexit in the UK) must carry a standard label providing key information. Here’s what the label means and why it matters.

1. Fuel Efficiency (A–E)
This rating indicates the tyre’s rolling resistance, which affects fuel consumption. A-rated tyres are the most fuel-efficient, potentially reducing your fuel bills over time.

2. Wet Grip (A–E)
This measures how well the tyre performs in wet conditions — a crucial factor in the UK’s frequently rainy weather. An A-rated tyre offers the shortest braking distance on wet roads, enhancing safety.

3. External Noise Level (dB)
The label shows how much road noise the tyre produces, measured in decibels. Quieter tyres contribute to more comfortable driving and reduced environmental noise pollution.

4. Snow and Ice Performance Icons
Some tyres display additional icons for snow grip (3PMSF symbol) or ice performance. These are useful if you’re considering all-season or winter tyres for colder months.

UK Regulations
In the UK, it’s illegal to drive with tyres that have less than 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Regularly check your tyres, especially if you cover high mileage.

Understanding these labels helps you choose tyres that balance safety, efficiency, and comfort — and ensures you remain within legal requirements on UK roads.
